General advice
So you’re probably reading through this blog thinking “oh my goodness, I’m overwhelmed” and I understand the struggle. That’s why I’m also going to highlight some tips and tricks on how you optimise your job search.
1. Putting ‘near me’ in your search.
Just like searching ‘restaurant openings near me’, searching ‘jobs near me’ or ‘jobs hiring near me’ will help show you the jobs that are hiring near your location.
2. Know where to look.
Don’t limit yourself to the jobs on the big, mainstream job search engines. There are many jobs on local job boards and search engines, on social media and in person. Searching specific keywords like “no experience jobs near me” or “jobs Sydney” will get picked up and ads on your social media platforms will start showing you job advertisements that are relevant to you.
For example, I recently received this advertisement on Facebook when I was searching for “marketing jobs near me”.
3. Find jobs that align with your skills and capabilities.
When searching for jobs, be specific with what you want to find, for example, if you’re in NSW and you’re looking for jobs in the health industry type in ‘jobs NSW health’ and the more you search those keywords, the more targeted ads for jobs in that specific industry will appear.
4. Be confident in yourself and what you have to offer.
It is not a listed trait in many job listings, however, Indeed has highlighted that confidence is a key characteristic that employers are looking for as confident employees are often friendly, keen to learn and great team players.
5. Keep an eye out for multiple positions at one company
Often companies are looking to hire for multiple positions. As there is no limit to how many jobs you can apply for, I suggest you apply for multiple positions at a company if you feel like the positions are right for you. For example, as listed above, many companies such as Five Point Burgers and Good Group Hospitality are looking to fill in many positions that cater to similar and differing skill sets. Still unsure?
